The goal posts have moved on when it comes to all new car designs and will continue to do so.The design of Type R models was originally focused on race conditions, with an emphasis on minimizing weight, and maximizing performance potential (e.g. engine tuning, suspension set-up). Thus, Type R models were first conceived for racetracks. However, due to Honda's increased focus on their highly regarded VTEC engines, the Type R was eventually designed for a much wider market.Basically when Honda wanted more pennies from a main stream audience, they changed the goal posts on what would be released in a Type R variant.
It's only got worse and worse with each model through the years, and the FN2 is the pinnacle of how worthless the Type R badge has really become.
