Couple of my cars fall into this category I think although might be a bit too old.

Nova turbo - Sadly not very cheap any more and parts are getting hard to get.

MR2 turbo - Easyish conversion and cheap to do. Mate bought one already converted for £1.1k needing an MOT.

Staying on the Honda theme... I'd buy an old EK 3dr civic, build a D16Z6 or Y8 and turbo it. Strip the interior and fit some 16x7 R888s, a set of second hand coilovers and there you have one mean trackday machine. Would probably benefit from an LSD and stronger clutch but all in not the most expensive way of going very, very fast.

If you're after a light, chuckable track car then a seven rep beats all of them hands down. You won't make a car any lighter, it has rwd, power to weight ratio is impressive, within your budget and cheap to maintain.

I've no idea why someone would choose a corsa, saxo, 106 etc over the above.

A Lotus 7 replica...as in a kitcar. They are often sub 500kg and are fairly quick even with a fairly moderate engine. Unfortunately there are a lot of poor ones out there and the good ones aren't really that cheap.

Yes Lotus Seven replicas. Westfield, Dax, Sylva Strikers and countless others. I'd like a Westy specifically with a 2L zetec engine myself but that comes with a slightly higher price although still sub 10k. There are plenty of good, exciting examples available at prices comparative to some of the cars posted here and you wouldn't feel like a complete arse driving around in a silly Corsa or alike.
