Yea the first year is dearer on new cars because of global warming/the boogey man/eskimo's and other made up stuff.

It's not even 4 tanks of fuel difference in tax, more like 1.5, think I could manage that.

Anyone know how the old one compares to the new? I'm under the impression so far as it's the same as ep3 vs fn2.

hardly anything in them performance wise, people who have drove both say the mk1 feels quicker but the mk2 is just that tad bit quicker, bose system is meant to be better in the mk1 dont ask why? the ride in the mk1 is meant to be smoother, tuning for the mk2 is virtually non exist-ant lol personally i cant stand the looks of the mk2 but if you like the looks of it i dont think you can go far wrong with either !

£425 for the year on the mk1.

Cheers dan, much prefer the mk1. Just been looking at the power rankings on the mps owners forum, easily attainable power isn't it, but I suppose that's what you get with FI. All you need is sri/cai, tip, fmic, cbe (Learing all the new lingo, it's like a new language :-| ) Roughly 2k will get you about 350hp and 350lb/ft.

Can the rest of the car take that power without hiccup though?

yep, plenty of people running that setup. So long as you get a decent tuner it'll be fine, as the engine isn't quite as bullet proof as the honda's. Standard brakes are apparently very capable too.

yeah, sounds exactly like the EP3, it is cheap as chips to get massive gains from

Mk2 has all the main complaints from the Mk1 sorted, so the steering is a bit better (still not brilliant) the aero kit is standard, stiffness has increased by 41% and the suspension has been sorted. The torque steer has been better kept under control and unless on wet B roads you don't notice it at all, the Mk2 benefits hugely from it's chassis developed for the Focus RS so it can put the power down a touch easier.
When tested by evo mag the Mk2 had the legs on the Focus RS between 60-100mph so it's no slouch! (albeit by 0.2 seconds).

Much of the 2 cars are the same, engine though reworked a bit in the Mk2 so more mid range torque, the sound system is the same, the slippy diff is the same and the norrow power band is the same, so not all the complaints have been addressed.

Performance wise, near identical in a straight line though the Mk2 has shed 25kg's and i've yet to see a comparative lap time to what effect, if any, the stiffer chassis and suspension has had.

Don't you just hate swings and roundabouts :-D

I watched a review on youtube last night that said the restriction (via butterfly valve) in the first few gears has increased, i.e slower, so to make it easier to get the power down on the mk2. Apparently it's slower to 60 but faster over 1/4 mile. Sound right?

Does the mk2 have the same suspension as the new RS then?

I've found the Mk2 quite restrictive in 1st & 2nd but you can press the DSC OFF button which gives you full power & torque should you want it, it may just be me but the throttle also feels more responsive with the dsc off. It has to be dry and a good road though as it's not difficult to light up the fronts on a damp road.
They've not made a engineering breakthrough to control the power at low speeds, just an electronic brain holding more back until you get into third gear.
It does give an interesting sensation of just getting faster and faster as you climb through the gears.

With the DSC on, i wouldn't be surprised if the Mk1 was a bit quicker to 60 and as the Mk2 is a bit lighter and has more torque and power lower in the rev range the Mk2 could well be a bit quicker over 1/4 mile. Then there'll be so little between them the driver will make a much bigger difference and who ever puts their foot down first.

Is there a common fault with the dsc/abs?

ye, it doesn't affect the ABS ( strangley ) but it does mean you have no T/C 250pound fix only seems to happen to 07 plates ones

Well, it's started. Hit 15psi and it sounds like a jet engine, change gear and you get a noise like a BOV is fitted.

I have noticed a slight difference in performance as the boost comes in quicker, not sure about the manufacturer claimed +22whp though, possibly half that at best. When taking off the OEM intake i was surprised how small the pipe was.
Watch this space for the remap.

Thinking about Litchfield Imports as they are the closest to me, they will do the ecutek for £450 which should see 290-300bhp plus they have good experience working with turbos.

It is the one in Tewkesbury. There are good mazda tuners in Newcastle, Bradford and in Kent so the only one in the midlands is Mr Litchfield.

The metal bit is a heat shield, the car has a section of the bonnet scoop that directs air onto the intake.
