I get it but only like 10% of the time, no idea what or where it's coming from, think maybe the heating fans?

It's the one thing about the car that drives me nuts. I've had rattles, squeaks and knocks from various parts of the dash which strangely seem to come and go. I've had the one you mention in the past and it seemed to be more prevelant after starting in cold weather. My current annoying rattle emanates from the lower dash panel to the right of the steering column.
.
I wonder if it is down to a complex piece of dash architecture comprising many panels which are flexing in different directions. I also wonder if the stiffness of the chassis is a contributory factor. I would be interested to know if the issue afflicts other models in the Civic range to the same extent. :?:

I think we share the same car. Mine is exactly the same. I took it back to the stealers and sods law - that day it hardly rattled. They messed with the perpex bit in front of the rev counter (I could see figerprints on it afterwards). It rattles a bit less now, but not much less.

Apart from any bad fitting that may occur,I think you 're absolutely right!.The dash is quite complex.I am lucky enough to not have any rattles or creaks considering I live in the southern part of Australia where you can have 4 seasons in one day!and therefore subject to various temperatures. Our roads are not the best and the only noise I hear is from the suspension trying to cope with any rough road surface it encounters.
If Honda wishes to continue with this dash theme in future models it needs to simplify it and do more testing in the fitting and materials used.
We also have the Civic sedan, but IMHO the dash from the hatch seems a little bit more classy(and complex)
I also peruse the Golf GTI and Megane RS forums; dash rattles/creaks and other rattles seem to be one of the more frequent problems for those cars as well.
ALL manufacturers should lift their game--rattles /creaks shouldn't be a mandatory 'free option'.

I had two squeaks with my car but found out what they both were, one was my sunglasses in the storage area above the gear knob and the other was the drivers ventilation fans, when you fully close the blades, the noise isn't that bad.

I am getting the exact same squeak. Its as if the sheet of clear perspex which covers the rev counter is constantly being rubbed up against something which is attached to the inside of the plastic panel between it and the steering column. I was inspecting it today and think i'll try stripping it some night next week. I've had my ctr about three months now and its been doing it since day one. I live on a really bumpy road which doesnt help matters either.

This is interesting - I had a really annoying rattle but since I have stopped using the heater (Australia Summer is coming) it seems to have completely disappeared.

From my experience, every new car I've owned has had it's share of rattles. It's almost impossible to avoid.

In tend to subscribe to the thinking that rattles around the dash may be more prominent in high performance Hondas because the NVH (noise vibration harshness) is higher than in other cars. Increased resonance at certain frequencies type thing. Just a feeling I have.

Mines developed a horrible creaky/clunk/click noise from just under the windscreen, only does it if one wheel hits a bump and not if both do (ie going over a full width speed bump). Is there much point taking it back to the dealer?? Any ideas? Cheers

Well noise travels, is it possible it could be one or both of your front springs? I had a terrible time with clunking springs in my old Integra Type-S. There was even a TSB in the end to remedy it!

I have got the same problem, in exactly the same place. It is definately the plastic around the perspex dial screen. It seems to be worse when it is cold. When I took delivery of the car last November, it was doing it every day. After a month I went to the stealers and because the journey is about an hour away, it had stopped doing it when I got there and they thought I was a metal case and suggested it would go away (just parts wearing in???). It hasnt been so bad for the last 10 months and then as soon as the cold weather starts, it has started again :bad-words: . Going to go back to Honda but have a fear that they will strip the dash and have the car for several days! Has anyone had the problem rectified yet? And if so was there a specific, identifyable piece of dash that was causing it?

Just want to add, I have had 3 new cars in the last 7 years and never had any squeeks of this magnitude! Dont think its acceptable from a modern day car. Its a shame because the rest of the car is fantastic!

squeek actually comes from nearside windscreen rubber seal. honda confirmed to me that grit gets in here and wears seal. then starts to squeek. replaced mine free twice now. honda know its a fault and aer working on fix
