Dan do you want/need any bits for it, I know of a GTi which is probably getting broken for spares in the next week or so.

Oh yes. The Shedaru dumped us on the side of the M6 last week, and the contents of its sump all over itself. Standing in the pi$$ing rain trying to have a conversation with the AA over the noise of HGVs is massively FTL. It's beyond economic repair, so it won't be dumping us on the hard shoulder again, it's gone off to be dissected to death by a breaker.

Replaced it with a 2002 Saab 9-5 Aero HOT.

Bargetastic. Not as cheap as Dan's Scrote, though.

This the 2.5?
2.3 four pot turbo, the 250bhp jobby. Goes well enough for something the weight of the QEII!

I was also looking at the V6 diesel, looked like a massive bargain. Thought it was a bit fishy that they were going for similar money to the petrols, so googled it. Serious reliability issues with terrifying costs to repair or replace. If they've ever been run low on oil there's a very good chance they'll drop a cylinder liner. So I chickened out. There are issues with the petrol engines too, but should be largely avoided if you buy the Aero models (because they were run on fully synth, and the lower powered ones weren't). Have got the sump dropped and cleaned out anyway, or will have as soon as the Saab dealer get a bleeding sump plug in stock...

I need the car back from them this afternoon, otherwise I'm going to have to drive to London for the night in the Elise with snow predicted in the morning. Which would not be my favourite.

Always fun, and it's probably not that bad in the snow, with most of the weight over the driven wheels, but the mongtards on the M25 and M4 seem to have trouble seeing a little, low black car at the best of times. Worry is being wiped out in poor visibility by someone in an SUV or a foreign truck. Also seems a shame to put motorway miles on it, if you know what I mean.

Friend of the family is a massive saab fan; he chopped in his v6 diesel with engine failure, for a newer v6 with less miles. Within a week his new one went bang. Garage offered to fix it or let him have a full refund and the part ex car back. He took rhe latter option as he knew the car and got a new engine put in. Certainly not the reliable beasts you expect.

The petrol hot ones are seriously quick, but, and I'm probably stating the obvious, with cheap tyres they torque steer and spin up for giggles. Not sure if the latters has better traction control.

Sounds like I made the right call on that one!

Yes, I've spent very little time in front drivers and none in quick ones since the Civic went, five or six years ago - I'd almost forgotten how scrabbly they are on cold, wet roads. 258lbft @1900-4000rpm and the soft response of a turbocharged engine don't help either. It does have stability control and presumably traction control too, but it still seems pretty willing to spin up the fronts. To be honest, heavy, front drive, four cylinder and turbocharged is pretty much everything I don't like in one package, but this beast wasn't really bought for fun, so it doesn't matter. Something like a 530i touring would have been a better drive, but part of the function of this is to be better in the snow than the Elise or 350Z, and I'm not sure the BMW would be. It is absolutely massive inside, though, incredibly comfortable, well equipped, quiet, safe, etc.
