I really like the look of this and with 276bhp will go like stink!

No sooner have we written about the Astra GTC, than Vauxhall unveils a properly hot version - its new Astra VXR.
With 276bhp and 295lb ft from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder motor, the new hot hatch will be one of the most powerful hot hatches in its class, as well as the most powerful production Astra ever, although Vauxhall is yet to reveal full details of the car's performance.

The old VXR recipe of bunging in a load of power and hang the finesse seems to have been dropped as well - because looking at the spec sheet it seems the new Astra VXR might actually have a chance of matching its pace with some polished handling.

As with its GTC cousin, the new VXR comes equipped for starters with Vauxhall's HiPer Strut front suspension, which helps to both improve agility and reduce torque steer. On top of that there's also a proper mechanical LSD, adaptive switchable dampers and a Nurburgring sign-off programme helped along by touring car hero (and Le Mans winner) Jo Winkelhock (and what a legend he is).
Visually, the VXR gets a set of unique front and rear bumpers, side skirts, an aerodynamic roof spoiler and two trapezoidal exhaust tail pipes. Inside, the VXR's cabin gets 'performance' seats with embossed logos in the backs, a flat-bottomed VXR steering wheel and upgraded instruments.

There's no word on prices as yet, but we would bet against somewhere around the £25k mark when it goes on sale next year - putting it head to head with the new Ford Focus ST and Megane Renaultsport (both of which it will comfortably outgun).

i had an sri 1.8 sporthatch before my ctr and it was a good car ,comfy with good spec for £16.500i couldn't complain , it was great on the straight roads but was quite bad if you went round a roundabout carrying a bit of speed, it understeered badly and you would drift off line by some margin , i had a few scary moments in it but all things considered a good car , But the dealers are really bad , not interested in your problem unless you go to vaux customer care , which i did to get it sorted in the end .
i like the new car but i dont think i would buy one purely because of what happened last time , once bitten , if they can sort out the handling it will be a good car im sure .

The interior minus the seats looks exactly the same as my current base spec hire car.

It's comfortable but I think it has a fault. There's a light always on on the dash that says SHIFT with a triangle..... Oh and it's a 1.4

WHY?

Because they keep the cars NA. Honda now suck in the power department.

Very few hot hatch engines compare with the K20 for overall driver satisfaction. It is not just about raw power.

So do I, the FN2 got panned because it only had 1bhp more than the EP3 yet it's a much better car to own. If the FN2 started life with 220bhp it would be considered by everyone as the better car as the FN2 has more overall driver satisfaction (Well it did for me anyway), it just missed the headline BHP figure.

Therefore the MPS is better than the FN2 and the FD2?

This, obviously is simply not true - there is far more to a car than how fast it goes in a straight line.

The FN2 might be slower than many of the current hot hatches but it is still right up there.

I wasn't comparing anything to an k20.

It was aimed at the "Why can't they just make a 250+BHP hot hatch" comment.

Nothing was said about overall driver satisfaction.

Power figures are for the pub and max power. The MPS is hardly what you would call nimble despite the headline grabbing power figure, neither is the VXR.

Depends what you're comparing them to, a Lotus exige it's not even close, an FN2 it's not far behind at all.
