I am faced with a dillema, i would love to refurb my wheels, but mine are powder coated at the moment. so i dont know how i would go about getting the coating off them.

I have found someone in St. Helens who will professionally powder coat all 4 wheels in white for me for £50

I was considering spraying them following the instructions on here, but if i can get them coated for £50 then i think it's a good idea.

But i dont know how to remove powder coating, can i sand it off, or would i need to get it sandblasted off?

I'd just get them acid dipped, would cost around £20 for a set of 4 wheels, then as you say get them proffesionally powdercoated seen as its so cheap. Jobs a good 'en!

I'm thinking of doing a set of wheels myself, one question though - as I am pretty lazy
and dont fancy doing all that sanding can I start off using a wire brush drill bit?

I tried to do it all by hand and about a minute into the first wheel i thought i was going to burn through my hand!. Used a mates Orbital Sander in the end. Orbital FTW

Right, after trying a sander, this is ok for the spokes etc, however for the curved surface on the inside of the wheel this is no good; therefore has anyone tried using a Flap Wheel or Wire Brush drill attachment, or will they be far too abrasive? :???:

cheers

well I'm going for either white or gunmetal - atm they are white with a red rim but it looks cheesey! being swayed towards the gunmetal so I dont have to clean the wheels to much, but I do need to put some new brakepads on the front so could just go white wheels and redstuff pads!

What is everyone else using to fill in scrapes? Just high build primer or??
My mate and I did his by hand with the sanding......pain in the ass.

Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm thinking of giving this a go.

Just wondering what the best lacquer to use is, and will they stand up to tyres being fitted? I'll be refurbing the wheels with the tyres off

It's not as strong, i tried it on one, sanded, fillered, primered then paint but didn't like the colour so gave up and it chipped easily, would be stronger with laquer.

My wheels are now in the paintshop being straightened and powder coated for £280
